Training
To progress through the Geup grades you should aim to train at a certified school at least twice a week. Dan members should expect to assist in teaching at least twice per week in addition to attending classes to train.
Part of the philosophy of Soo Bahk Do is that senior members should always look to help and guide more junior members.
Ideally you should put aside at least 20 minutes per day to practice some aspect of Soo Bahk Do. For example:
-
Stretching and general flexibility can be done anywhere, including sat in front of the TV!
-
Hyung (forms) can be practiced in the living room or kitchen (waiting for the kettle to boil)
-
Terminology can be reviewed during coffee and lunch breaks - better to read that than free newspapers or old magazines
A guide to the Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan grading (belt) system can be found on the syllabus page
The official Soo Bahk Do syllabus includes the following aspects:
-
Ki Cho (basics) - the basic moves that are used for forms, one-step, sparring, etc
-
Hyung (forms)
-
Il Soo Sik Dae Ryun (one-step sparring)
-
Ho Sin Sul (self defence) - wrists grips, sleeve grips, etc
-
Soo Bahk Do Terminology (in Korean) - instructions, names of moves, counting, general etiquette, etc
-
Ja Yu Dae Ryun (free sparring) - Soo Bahk Do is a martial art not a sport, so sparring is non- or semi-contact only
-
Kyok Pa (breaking) - techniques for breaking wood and concrete blocks
-
Moo Pahl Dan Khum (breathing/energy exercises)
